Circuit Q&A: What Is Your Favorite Reese Witherspoon Performance?

The Oscar-winning actress celebrates her birthday…

Today marks the birthday of the multi-talented Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon. Starting out as an instant star of the big screen, Witherspoon has since become a prominent face on television, as well as a successful producer and industry spearhead in female-led projects.

She rose to prominence in the late 90s with the comedies “Pleasantville” and “Election,” the latter of which earnt her a Golden Globe nomination for her hilarious performance as Tracy Flick (‘Pick Flick!’). She found her feet using her comedic chops and led Robert Luketic’s “Legally Blonde” a couple of years later.

Her career would take a dramatic turn for the better when she landed the role of June Carter Cash in “Walk the Line” alongside Joaquin Phoenix. She sang and danced her way to the Oscar stage that year, beating a star-studded line-up including Judi Dench, Felicity Huffman, Keira Knightley, and Charlize Theron. Although she’s yet to win again, Witherspoon has returned to the ceremony since with another true-life performance. In 2014 she took on the role of Cheryl Strayed in “Wild,” a story about a woman’s self-discovery and healing through taking a 1,100-mile hike.

Since this time, Witherspoon has catapulted herself to the top of the television food chain, becoming one of the more prominent figures in the television scene. Witherspoon, together with Nicole Kidman, optioned the screen rights for the novel “Big Little Lies” with the pair serving as executive producers as well as stars on the show. It saw Witherspoon collaborate with Jean-MarcValleé once more, given their success with “Wild” and boasted a dynamite cast, including Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz. Having won the Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series in 2017, the show came back for an unexpected second series last year with Meryl Streep on board.

Witherspoon can be seen currently starring in Apple TV’s debut series “The Morning Show” alongside Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell, which focuses on the ruthless morning television scene during a sexual harassment scandal. Her performance in the show earnt her a sixth Golden Globe nomination.

Even in smaller roles, Witherspoon has always brought her same brilliant charm, from her performance as Rachel’s sister in “Friends” to her role as Deputy Penny Kimball in Paul Thomas Anderson’s bizarre but brilliant “Inherent Vice.”

Witherspoon’s 2020 slate includes the Australian film “The Dry,” which she also produces, and the Hulu miniseries “Little Fires Everywhere,” starring alongside Kerry Washington.

These are just a few of Witherspoon’s finest works, with an impressive filmography built up over the years. Are there any particular favorites that haven’t been mentioned? It’s over to you to have your say on the best of Reese Witherspoon!
